1. A Leader: Prof. Claudia Goldin, Harvard, Nobel Prize winner on women’s equality in the labor market – we are not there yet

Prof. Claudia Goldin, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University, is the 3rd woman who won the Nobel Prize in Economics. Goldin won the prize for her work on women in the labor market.

Goldin’s research covers a wide range of topics including the female labor force, the gender gap in earnings, income inequality, and beyond.

Most of her research interprets the present through the lens of the past and explores the origins of current issues of concern. Her books include Women Working Longer, The Race Between Education and Technology, The Defining Moment, and Understanding the Gender Gap.

Goldin shows how generations of women have responded to this problem of balancing work and family. Pouring over data, including employment surveys, census records, and more, Goldin notes that even today, equity between dual-career couples is just out of reach.

Data Commons, an initiative led by Google, is committed to enhancing the accessibility and utility of publicly available global data. It addresses the challenge of disparate data formats and sources by standardizing and processing vast datasets from thousands of reliable public sources.

This standardization effort, ongoing since 2017, has created a unified Knowledge Graph with a single API and schema, simplifying data integration and expediting data-driven insights for users.

Data Commons relies on over 200 public data sources, covering a wide range of domains and 194 countries. It operates as an open-source project and collaborates with organizations and nonprofits to facilitate data-driven decision-making and address societal challenges effectively.
