1. A Leader: Melanie Perkins, Canva CEO: Designing a Brighter Future
- The importance of dreaming – an optimistic look at a more friendly, more effective, kinder, and more equality in the world.
- Turning dreams into mission and executable goals.
- Clearly defining the company’s values to guide decisions.
These were the most important ideas for Melanie Perkins when she started her endeavor to create her Graphic Design tool. They still are. Melanie Perkins is now the co-founder and CEO of the online graphic design tool Canva.
Headquartered in Sydney, thousands of miles away from Silicon Valley, Perkins has built a design platform that easily rivals those offered by giants like Adobe and Microsoft, all while keeping accessibility at the heart of its mission.
Canva has grown to offer services in over 100 languages, with 125 million users in 190 countries. The company operates on a “freemium” subscription model that includes basic features at no cost, with the option to pay for upgrades.
Perkins believes the most salient examples of the company’s impact are in how it’s changed everyday lives. The company values, set in collaboration with the team, founders, and stakeholders are:
- Be a force for good
- Pursue excellence
- Make complex things simple
- Empowering others
- Set crazy goals and make them happen
- Be good humans
In December 2022 Melanie Perkins delivered the opening keynote at Sunrise Australia where she explained her way of doing business and how she made it a reality.

2. A Notion: Is Society Too Dependent on Technology?
Technology plays a major role in our lives, and many of us may find it hard to remember a time when phones, computers, tablets, and other devices weren’t a part of everyday life. While technology certainly makes life easier and more convenient, many wonder whether or not our society is too dependent on technology.
This article by the University of People summarizes 10 facts on how technology impacts society and cultures.
Is society too dependent on technology? Technology is a great resource for learning and obtaining the skills we need for a successful career. But this must come with learning how to navigate life without completely relying on technology.

3. Quantum Computing Explained: By Dr. Dario Gil, VP of Science and Solutions at IBM Research
We are moving rapidly toward quantum computing. How does the technology work, and what does it mean for our future? Scientist Dr. Dario Gil, VP of Science and Solutions at IBM, provides clarity on this complex topic with a deck of cards. David Morczinek gives the introduction.
Dr. Gil is a leading technologist and senior executive at IBM. As Vice President of Science and Solutions of IBM Research, Dr. Gil directs a global organization of some 1,500 researchers across 11 laboratories. He has direct responsibility for IBM’s science agenda, with a broad portfolio of activities spanning the physical sciences, the mathematical sciences, healthcare, and the life sciences.
