1. Big Tech: Meta’s Threads Future is on ‘Fediverse’
Threads, Instagram’s Twitter-like application, launched on 6-JUL-2023 and within 16 hours broke the ChatGPT record by gaining 30 million downloads within 16 hours.
The attention went mostly to the download levels, the comparisons Threads-Twitter and the rivalry between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. However, together with Threads Meta announced their intention to adopt the fediverse.
The term “fediverse” refers to a collection of decentralized social media platforms that operate using open standards and protocols, allowing users to interact across multiple platforms seamlessly. The Fediverse operates on the principles of decentralization and federation, where each platform maintains its own servers but can connect with others.
By launching Threads in the fediverse, Meta aims to leverage the existing network effect and reach a broader user base. This move breaks down barriers between different social networks and promotes a more open and interconnected digital landscape.

2. Lifelong Learning: LLL in the Informal Economy
Over 60 percent of the global workforce is engaged in informal employment (i.e., employment without social security rights.)
People in the informal economy face numerous barriers to accessing skills and lifelong learning opportunities, building their careers, and contributing productively to local economic and sustainable development.
One might expect that technological progress and innovation will make a change, but it is not necessarily the case.
The ILO’s Global Commission on the Future of Work has proposed “a universal entitlement to lifelong learning that enables people to acquire skills and to reskill and upskill.”
