How Microsoft Uses a Growth Mindset to Develop Leaders

A growth mindset is a belief that talent should be developed in everyone and not viewed as a fixed, innate gift that some have and others don’t. Harvard Business Review showcases Microsoft, which is deliberately creating a growth-mindset culture and, in that context, rethinking its approach to development.

Under Satya Nadella’s leadership, Microsoft is emphasizing learning and creativity. Nadella believes this is how leaders are made, and as a result, previously unidentified — yet skilled — leaders are rising to levels they might not have in a traditional development model.

MITSloan: The Cultural Benefits of AI in the Enterprise

AI implementations in organizations improved their efficiency and decision-making, as well as their organizational effectiveness and enterprise cultures. A report by MIT Sloan & BCG, based on a global survey of 2,197 managers and interviews with 18 executives, identifies a wide range of AI-related cultural benefits at the team and organizational levels.

75% of respondents reported improvements in team morale, collaboration, and learning. Survey respondents who saw significant financial benefits from their AI initiatives were 10 times more likely to change how they measure success than those who saw no such benefits.

Additionally, AI helped leaders identify new performance drivers, and also helped these organizations to realign behaviors and become more competitive.

The image above shows the cultural-use-effectiveness dynamic at the organizational level: Organizational culture can improve AI adoption, which in turn improves organizational effectiveness, which in turn improves organizational culture.

What Is ChatGPT Doing… and Why Does It Work?

What’s going on inside ChatGPT? How is it so good in producing what we might consider to be meaningful content?

Our Person of the Week, Stephen Wolfram, gives a rough outline of what’s going on inside ChatGPT in a live ~3-hour presentation, including Q&A from the audience. Written summary and examples from this talk can be found on Stephen Wolfram Writings website here.

Stephen Wolfram is the founder and CEO of the software company Wolfram Research, where he works as chief designer of Mathematica and the Wolfram Alpha answer engine.

Over the course of nearly four decades, he has been a pioneer in the development and application of computational thinking—and has been responsible for many discoveries, inventions, and innovations in science, technology, and business.

Building on Mathematica and the ideas of A New Kind of Science, Wolfram embarked on a still more ambitious project: constructing a system that would make as much of the world’s knowledge as possible immediately computable and accessible to everyone. The release of Wolfram|Alpha in May 2009 was widely regarded as a historic step that has defined a new dimension for computation and artificial intelligence—and is now relied on by millions of people every day to compute answers both directly and through intelligent assistants such as Siri.

In 2014 Wolfram made another breakthrough, building on Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha to create the Wolfram Language. Based on the unprecedentedly deep technology stack that Wolfram has developed over the course of three decades, the Wolfram Language introduces the new concept of a knowledge-based language, in which immense knowledge about computation and the world is integrated, and a new level of highly automated programming becomes possible, that both enables more sophisticated applications than ever before and opens up programming to a much broader range of people.

LIVE: Seeking Digital Heights with Yariv Hasar

On the 4th and last session of the DigitalRosh LIVE series “Seeking Digital Heights with AGI,” we met Yariv Hasar, General Manager and Chief Delivery Officer at Pagaya Technologies

Pagaya is a credit-analysis platform that enables borrowers, lenders, and agents to make more empowered credit decisions, providing greater access to financial opportunities for their customers.

Pagaya created a centralized enabling technology that powers the AI network in which customers are evaluated in real-time. The network matches applications to the criteria of institutional investors. Pagaya’s partners benefit from higher conversion while customers reach their financial goals. In a way, this democratizes access to financial services.

Yariv explained the business model behind Pagaya’s operation and concluded his lecture with their top 5 values (in which the first one is continuous learning.) Yariv answered questions from the attendees and gave us his take on the future of AI and AGI.

Notre-Dame: Building a Digital Twin

A fascinating video by Deutsche Welle (DW) documents the intricate reconstruction process of Notre Dame de Paris, France’s iconic landmark cathedral that was devastated by a fire in April 2019.

A major part of the reconstruction process is laser scanning of the entire cathedral to produce its 3D digital twin. In addition, a special set of cameras developed specifically for this huge-scale project took hundreds of photos to record the debris. All of the Cathedral’s data will be compiled on a single digital platform archiving the different stages of the monument’s life for research and restoration.

The platform is not only for reference but also a real working tool that allows navigation through a colossal database that continues to develop. The digital twin of the cathedral is poised to play a key role in Notre Dame’s restoration.
