1. Survey: What Languages Dominate the Internet?
For someone to be convinced that English is essential for finding their way in the world, especially in the technological world, there must be firm numbers.
A survey made by w3Techs shows that a little more than 50% of the sites on the web use English as their primary language. Given that native English speakers make up just under 5% of the global population, that’s a lot more than one might expect.
Chinese and Hindi are the second and third most-spoken languages in the world, but the same scan found they account for just 1.4% and 0.07% of domains, respectively.
Since the internet is used to train large language models like GPT-4 and Bard, the same imbalance will grow in the AI future.
If it was not clear until now – English proficiency is a must.

2. Study: Defense AI in Israel: Embracing the Organized Mess
“Embracing the Organized Mess” is a study on defense AI in Israel, published by The Defense AI Observatory (DAIO). The DAIO, at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, Germany, monitors and analyzes the use of artificial intelligence by armed forces.
Researchers Inbar Dolinko and Liran Antebi (PhD.) argue in this paper that despite notable progress, “Israel’s approach to defense AI is the result of an ‘organized mess,’ triggered by Israel’s informal culture, the country’s tendency to let market forces push technology forward, a demanding security environment, and the need to be able to respond to new threats in a quick and flexible manner.”

4. Case Study: Baiae, Italy – How AI Is Transforming the Archaeological World
New uses of AI are continually being developed in connection with archaeological and human remains.
Over 2,000 years ago, Baiae was the most magnificent resort town on the Italian peninsula. Today, Baiae is one of the world’s few underwater archaeological parks.
The sunken city of Baiae uses AI to support a network of acoustic modems and underwater wireless sensors that capture and transmit environmental data to land in real-time.
The system depends on AI algorithms to constantly change the network protocol. When sea conditions change, the algorithms modify the information path from one node to another, allowing the signal to travel up to two kilometers.
