What Is Digital Transformation?

What Is Digital Transformation and Who Needs It?

The essence of digital transformation is to increase the organization’s ability to utilize digital for its goals. Digital transformation is a deep process of examining and adapting the business model, the work processes, and the organizational culture to the strategy of development and innovation. It is a circular and continuous process related to the development of technology and the competitive environment. Its purpose is to lead to problems solving, creating new business opportunities, and creating competitive differentiation, all while generating the ability to harness the organizational digital power to deal with possible futures.

To lead a digital transformation in the organization, we must have a deep understanding of the following:

  • The business and the field in which it operates
  • The digital technologies and the possible business models
  • Change processes in the organization (including aspects of culture and leadership)
  • Recognition of counseling processes (which is a discipline in itself)

Which Organizations Require Digital Transformation?

Any organization or a unit within an organization created before digital power became central to our personal and business lives (such as banks, insurance companies, service providers, heavy industry, defense, government, municipal authorities, and more) requires a digital transformation process. Adopting technologies by the organization and using them in its current activities is insufficient unless the process is assimilated to all employees and all the organization’s components and activities.

What Does a Digital Transformation Consultant Do?

To be a digital transformation consultant means to professionally and procedurally guide the organization’s management in the digital transformation process, which includes:
  • Analysis of the company’s situation, the competitive environment, and the stakeholders
  • The analyses of the digital tools suitable for the organization and their selection
  • Building the action plan
  • Phases of program implementation and control

What Is the Difference Between an Internal and an External Consultant?

The internal consultation is done by a senior manager of the organization, who is familiar with the digital world, can harness the management, and lead the internal organizational process. The external consultation is done by an expert in digital transformation management who is invited, by the organization, to help manage the process. Choosing between internal and external consulting will be made according to the nature of the organization, the management team, and the organizational culture, and also according to technical matters such as the type of organization and its communication methods.
