1. ⏳Time and📱Digital: Friends or Foes?
Time is our most valuable resource—a gift we share with our loved ones. Yet, it is continuously slipping away from us—every day, every hour, every second.
Before the digital age, we had more time and leisure. Digital platforms, particularly “zombification agents” like Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, consume vast amounts of our time. For instance, while writing this post, I found myself:
- Watching a Guinness World Record video of people eating spicy peppers.
- Creating an image of a cat in response to a friend’s WhatsApp message.
- Reading a BBC article (via LinkedIn) about a new Google quantum computer chip.
Thirty minutes of my life vanished. None of these actions aligned with my goals today. In hindsight, it feels like a waste. The digital world often appears to be the enemy of time.
However, this isn’t the whole story. Digital tools also enable us to use time more effectively. For example, while preparing this post, I:
- I generated the hourglass image in 10 minutes (it could have taken just 1 minute, but I spent 9 minutes unsuccessfully trying to remove a person from the top of the hourglass. Ultimately, I decided to keep the figure as a metaphor for those who “push the sand down” and waste our time. Sometimes, GPT just knows best).
- Explored insightful content about time (I had to stop diving too deep!).
- I polished my writing using Grammarly.
- Refined my ideas with GPT Canvas.
Digital can be both a friend and a foe to time. Like any tool, its value depends on how we use it. Ultimately, we must take control of these tools, ensuring they serve our goals rather than dictate or waste our time.
2. Video: How Your Brain Makes Time Pass Fast or Slow (Source: PBS)
The psychology of time as we perceive it. Sometimes super slow, sometimes “woosh.”
The more memories we create, the longer time feels. When we make many memories, our brain assumes more time has passed. Fewer memories make time feel shorter. According to neuroscientist David Eagleman, this phenomenon may explain why time seems to speed up as we age.
3. Data: Who Do We Spend Time With Across Our Lifetime? (Source: Our World in Data)
To understand how social connections evolve throughout our lives, we can examine survey data on how much time people spend with others and with whom.
The chart here shows the amount of time people in the US report spending in the company of others, based on their age.
The data comes from time-use surveys, where people are asked to list all their activities over a full day and the people present during each activity. We currently only have data for the US with this granularity. Time—use surveys are common across many countries. However, what is unique about the US is that American Time Use Survey respondents are asked to list everyone present during each activity.
4. Tips:How To Nicely Say “No” (With 50 Examples) (Source: Wikipedia)
Drew’s insights- Find thoughtful alternatives to common phrases like “No,” “Great job,” and “Thank you” that foster positivity and clarity. Transform your everyday conversations with strategies to build stronger connections and inspire collaboration. Make every word count!
5. Resource: Our World in Data (Source: DigitalRosh)
Our World in Data’s mission is to publish the “research and data to make progress against the world’s largest problems,” its goal is to make knowledge on the big problems accessible and understandable.
Poverty, disease, hunger, climate change, war, existential risks, and inequality—the world faces many significant and terrifying problems. Our World in Data’s work focuses on these critical problems.
Thousands of researchers from all over the globe collect, research, and analyze data on the challenges we must consider to promote a better world in which to live. The world has the resources to do much better and reduce suffering.
