1. GPS at 50: Diverse Applications Of GPS Technology (Spatialpost)

Marking 50 years since its invention, GPS technology remains at the forefront of innovation, continually adapting to meet the demands of contemporary applications and services.

Its versatility and reliability have made it indispensable across various industries, from navigation and logistics to telecommunications and agriculture. It is integrating into new hi-tech solutions and promising to play a vital role well into the future, ensuring precision, efficiency, and connectivity in an ever-changing world.

The guide, by Spatialpost, reviews 57 diverse applications of GPS technology that affect multiple areas of our lives.

The Person of the Week, Dr. Gladys West (B. 1930) is an American mathematician known for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the Earth and her work on the development of the satellite geodesy models that were eventually incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS). West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018.

2. Review: Apple Vision Pro: A Magic or Not (The Verge)

The Verge’s review of the Apple Vision Pro scrutinizes various facets of the device, offering a nuanced understanding of its strengths, weaknesses, and overall positioning in the realm of spatial computing.

While the Vision Pro aims to pioneer spatial computing, seamlessly integrating augmented reality into daily tasks, the article questions the tradeoffs users must make.

Emphasizing the device’s primary identity as a VR headset, the review delves into motion blur issues, color reproduction challenges, and a restricted field of view. As Apple envisions a future with true optical AR glasses, the Vision Pro is seen as a compromise between VR and AR, leading to a complex tradeoff.

The review concludes by urging users to carefully consider these tradeoffs before embracing the Vision Pro as a primary computing device.

3. AI@China: 40 AI Models in Rapid Development Push (GlobalData)

In the past six months, China has approved over 40 artificial intelligence (AI) models for public use, following the implementation of rules in 2023 requiring tech companies to obtain regulatory approval for releasing large language models (LLMs).

The latest batch of approvals included 14 LLMs, with major tech companies like Alibaba, Baidu, and ByteDance among the first to receive approval.

Despite limitations imposed by export restrictions on advanced chips, China has made strides in AI development. Baidu claimed that its ChatGPT rival, Ernie 3.5, outperformed OpenAI’s AI chatbot in comprehensive ability scores, based on tests conducted by the China Science Daily using AGIEval and C-Eval benchmarks.

The US leads in the value of AI deals, with $50 billion in 2023, compared to China’s $7.9 billion, which remained relatively unchanged from 2022. Despite China’s progress, its ability to develop AI market leadership, without access to advanced manufacturing technology is a question.

4. News by AI: From the Editor to the Anchoreman “Simply News” made by AI

Simply News is a series of podcasts delivered by a team of AIs broadcasting daily news from multiple areas like AI, Tech, Sports, and more.

The news is collected by an AI team that scans a vast array of the latest news sources, filters the items, and selects articles based on relevance and significance. Then, it crafts a narrative or angle, reviews and evaluates the selected items, and creates the podcast.

The daily podcast summarizes 3-5 news items collected from the dedicated world. The AI team that operates behind the scenes to curate and deliver the news uses ‘human’ names and approaches: an AI anchorperson introduces the subject and invites AI reporters to sum up the subject.
