Particular fields that would probaly feel the power of ChatGPT almost immediately are education and learning. With ChatGPT’s technology, students can now easily cheat on papers and college admissions essays, while on the opposite end, teachers can outsource their curriculums to AI—and no one would be the wiser.
Many people believe that ChatGPT will cause students to stop learning basic skills, because they’ll avoid practice, and forget general facts because they’ll always rely on ChatGPT. Anne Lee Skates explains on an article published at the andreessen horowitz platform that this case is not the whole truth regarding education. In order to explain why ChatGPT will not harm education she mentions the self-determination theory. This theory developed by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan suggest that humans are intrinsically driven by autonomy, relatedness, and competence—that is, they will continue to learn regardless of any shortcuts thrown their way.
Anne explored five predictions for AI and the future of learning, knowledge, and education:
- The one-on-one model goes mainstream – AI will help democratize one on one support like tutoring, coaching and mentorship for wider audiences.
- Individualized learning goes from dream to reality – With AI, it will become possible to personalize everything from learning modalities and needs (e.g., visual versus text versus audio) to content types (e.g., easily bring in a kid or adult’s favorite character or favorite hobby / genre) to curriculum.
- A new generation of AI-first tools for both teachers and students will rise – students and educators are natural trendsetters when it comes to productivity software.
- Assessments and credentialing will need to adapt and new assessment tools will be developed – Schools have banned the use of AI-writing tools such as ChatGPT due to debates over its use, but some educators believe it should be integrated into the learning process and will be a crucial career skill in the future, leading to adjustments in assessments and credentialing.
- Fact-checking will become critical as the “truth” gets distorted – How do we curate high-quality and factually accurate content in an era where there will be a firehose of it being created by anyone and everyone, and robots?
