How Can AI Accelerate the Discovery of Drugs and Their Properties? – Dr. Michal Rosen Zvi

Dr. Michal Rosen-Zvi is the Director, AI for Accelerated Healthcare & Life Sciences Discovery at IBM Research and a Professor at the Hebrew University at the Faculty of Medicine. She is also heading the AI for accelarated HC&LS discovery department at IBM Research, Haifa. Michal holds a PhD in computational physics and completed her postdoctoral studies at UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and the Hebrew University in the area of Machine Learning. She joined IBM Research in 2005 and has since led various projects in the area of machine learning and healthcare and was recognized for her contribution e.g. to AI technologies in wafer production and contributions to partnerships with pharmaceutical companies such as Guerbet and Teva.

Michal has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers. She is a member of the iScience Editorial Advisory Board, a member of the Israeli National Council of Digital Health and Innovation and an elected member of the Board of the Israeli Society for HealthTech.

In the following video Michal shares how AI is already being used to accelerate drug discovery. First she explains the five paradigms of science transformation along the history of science:

  1. Empirical science
  2. Theoretical science
  3. Computational science
  4. Big data-driven science
  5. Accelerated discovery

After that, she shows 2 concrete examples of the current exciting convergence phase that show just the tip of the iceberg.
