Can AI Achieve Its Potential in Healthcare?

Can AI Achieve Its Potential in Healthcare? Guy Melamed believes so, Only if Medical Schools Teach Students About Its Shortcomings.

Guy Melamed wrote an article about that specific subject in the 2022 winter JIMS (Journal of Israeli Medical Students) issue.

In the article he discusses the use of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of medicine. He tries to explain the concept of big data and how it can be used in medicine through predictive analytics and machine learning.

Despite frequent discussions, Guy points out that the implementation of AI in medicine has not yet reached its full potential. The article highlights some of the challenges that prevent medicine from fully benefiting from AI, such as the risk of bias, lack of understanding of AI algorithms, and privacy concerns. However, he mentions that emerging technologies such as explainable AI and federated learning could overcome these challenges. He concludes that the relative conservativeness of medicine is one way to keep immature technologies out of the clinic and that rapid technological improvement should help erase the discrepancy between the potential and actual use of AI in medicine.

Guy Melamed concentrates on healthcare along two paraller tracks: as an MD candidate (Tel aviv university) and as head of the Integration Department of KSM– Maccabi’s HMO Research and Innovation Center. He also founded JIMS – the Israeli Hub for Excellence and Leadership in Medicine.
