How to Use AI to Do Stuff: An Opinionated Guide

This guide serves as an orientation to the current state of AI tools, based on the author’s experience on how to pick the right tool to do things.

The author, Ethan Mollick, is a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. As powerful AI systems are being released at an increasingly rapid pace but “not a single AI lab seems to have provided any user documentation,” he decided to put together some ideas summarizing the current known Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, and Cloude2, comparing what they do and when to best use each of them.

Some uses he describes are:

  • To write stuff
  • Make images
  • Come up with ideas
  • Make videos
  • Work with documents and data
  • Get information and learn stuff

“AI is a tool.” Says Mollick: “It is not always the right tool. Consider carefully whether, given its weaknesses, it is right for the purpose to which you are planning to apply it.”
