1. Interview: Can Privacy-First Signal Win Over WhatsApp, Apple Messenger, etc.? (TechCrunch)
Meredith Whittaker, president of the Signal Foundation, often expresses her concerns about AI as a surveillance technology. Signal represents exactly the opposite. It offers a secured massaging in which privacy is above all. It is fully encrypted, with no trackers, ads, or investors to serve.
The generative AI industry is heavily dominated and controlled by a few Big Tech companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. This concentration of power poses significant threats to competition, democracy, culture, and individual agency.
Meredith Whittaker joined TechCrunch Senior Reporter Devin Coldewy for a conversation about the threats facing Signal, legislation and privacy, interconnection standards, meta-data encryption, how Signal beat Apple in raising the bar on encryption, and why NVIDIA is a “giant, core dependency” for the AI industry.
Whittaker hopes for robust regulatory interventions to increase transparency and accountability and break the monopolistic hold of these companies on the AI market.

2. Tech Industry: When Technology Meets Politics, DAAS – Disinformation As A Service
Omer Benjakob is the disinformation and cyber reporter for Haaretz. He was part of the Project Pegasus investigative journalism consortium, focusing on the intersection between technology and politics. In his projects, he describes a notorious type of the tech industry: Daas, Disinformation As A Service.
One of his recent projects was “Team Jorge”, an undercover investigation, with the collaborative efforts of over 30 reporters, helped bring into the lift the never-before-seen industry of Disinformation As A Service.
In his talk, Omer Benjakob focuses on the technologies of disinformation used by different providers and tries to address the wider question of social media, fake news.

3. Case Study: Apple Abandons Buy-Now-Pay-Later Service (GlobalData)
Apple announced it is discontinuing Apple Pay Later, its buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) service, as it steps back from the financial services sector. The decision was driven by rising interest rates, increasing compliance costs due to new regulations, and the challenging economics of BNPL offerings.
Despite analysts from GlobalData predicting the BNPL market will surpass $1 trillion by 2030, Apple will instead partner with third-party installment loan providers, aiming to streamline its global market entry and reduce operational risks.
The move allows Apple to target multiple markets more efficiently without bearing the financial and regulatory burdens of running a BNPL service directly.
Why did Apple decide to scrap the service after a year? The case study suggests several explanations.

4. Recommendation: AI-Driven Sales (Millefeuille.ai)
Gartner predicts that by 2025, 30% of outbound sales communications will be AI-generated.
There are two main ways to enhance sales performance with AI:
- Co-pilots: Tools that assist salespeople directly, requiring human approval for tasks like sending messages, scheduling meetings, responding to prospects, and creating presentations.
- Agents: Tools that autonomously handle parts of the sales process based on commands or pre-set prompts. Although this category is less developed, it shows great potential.
