DigitalRosh CONNECT: 05-Feb-2023 (Y23W06)

Y23W06

In this issue of DigitalRosh CONNECT we delve into the inner workings of complex mechanisms regulating our daily lives, sometimes without us noticing. From the behavior of viruses and plagues to decentralized autonomous organizations, and from transformer neural networks to Kubernetes – you will find here exciting content that might even keep you awake at night (thinking positive thoughts about the future…)

Wishing you all an enlightening learning,

Prof. Yesha Sivan, Founder, and CEO

DAO Toolkit

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are organizations constructed by rules encoded as computer programs, which are often transparent and controlled by their members.

This report, published by the World Economic Forum, is a collaboration involving more than 100 experts from both the public and private sectors and provides resources for developers, policy-makers, and other stakeholders interested in the DAO ecosystem.

It covers topics such as what DAOs are, their operations, governance, legal structures, and recommendations. With DAOs managing billions of dollars’ worth of assets, engaging millions of contributors, and operating across multiple industries, this report is a great resource for those seeking to learn more.

Prof. Ran Balicer – Viruses, Plagues & Men

Prof. Ran Balicer is an Israeli public health physician and researcher who noticed a massive correlation between the Corrupted Blood incident in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft and the spread of real-world diseases such as SARS and the Avian Flu.

As far back as 2007, he published an article in the Epidemiology journal that described the similarities between the virtual outbreak and the spread of diseases.

The Coronavirus pandemic showed similar phenomena to the World of Warcraft pandemic and Balicer is now the head cabinet of national experts in Israel, advising the government and the Magen for Israel system on how to manage the crisis.

We chose to bring to your attention Prof. Balicer’s TEDx talk, recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic, where he explains that role-playing games can be used as successful platforms for modeling drug distribution and that we can learn from virtual outbreaks.

Illustrated Guide to AGI Transformers

NLP (Natural Language Processing) is a field of Artificial Intelligence which has seen significant advancements recently through the application of Transformer neural networks.

Transformers are an architecture which was first introduced by Google Brain in 2017, and can be used for applications such as machine language translation, conversational chatbots and improved search engines.

The attention mechanism, a key component of the architecture, enables the model to understand the context and generate coherent responses. In 2017, the transformer architecture was demonstrated to perform better than previous models on machine translation tasks.

Michael Phi’s video provides a step by step explanation of how this novel neural network architecture works.

Bio-Mix-2023 Teva BioInnovators: Academia Meets Business

On January 26th, the 4th year of the Bio-Mix program was launched. The program, created by Teva and i8 Ventures as part of the National Forum for Bio-Innovators, provides an opportunity for doctoral and post-doctoral students to learn how to combine academic research with the real world.

The 4th year of the program started with an opening event on January 26th titled ‘Teva and Israeli Academia: Partners from the First Step’. Keynote lectures and professional sessions were led by leading researchers from various universities, and the event was attended by Teva, academic and government representatives. Isaac Herzog, President of Israel, sent a recorded greeting.

Bio-Mix is a chance for young researchers to brainstorm and network to advance academic innovation into drug discovery. The research topics of Bio-Mix participants will be featured at a special session of The Future of Digital Medicine course by DigitalRosh and the Technion.

Kubernetes Explained in 6 Minutes

Kubernetes is an open-source platform for automating the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It provides a way to manage and orchestrate containers such as Docker in a clustered environment.

Kubernetes enables users to easily scale, update, and manage their applications and services while also providing features such as automatic load balancing and self-healing capabilities. It is widely used in container orchestration and is supported by many cloud providers.

A video by ByteByteGo explains in 6 minutes what Kubernetes is, its architecture design, and why it is so useful, as well as its drawbacks. The video also provides an overview of the various features and benefits of Kubernetes, making it a great resource for those looking to understand more about the platform.

Prof. Varda Shalev About Data and AI in Medicine

Prof. Varda Shalev is a specialist in medical informatics and digital medicine.

An active family physician and a full professor of epidemiology at Tel Aviv University, Prof. Shalev established and managed the Maccabi Health Services Research Institute, and was co-founder of Alike – a social network for patients. These days, she is a managing partner of Team8 Capital, a venture fund leading investments in enterprise technology, cybersecurity, AI, and fintech.

Prof. Shalev is one of the industry speakers at the Future of Digital Medicine course by DigitalRosh and the Technion, starting on 1-MAY-2023.

In a talk given at the Israel Export Institute conference (April 2019), Prof. Varda Shalev is discussing her work in using data and artificial intelligence to predict and diagnose medical conditions. Her team has developed an algorithm to predict colon cancer using CBC data, which they have implemented and have seen successful results.
