1. Lecture: How AI by Microsoft is Transforming Lives for 10% of the Global Population (Microsoft)
10% of the global population has disabilities, according to the World Health Organization: ~5.0% have Hearing impairments, ~2.2% Visual Impairment, and ~1.7% Mobility Impairment. With these numbers, it is not only morally justified to invest in accessibility solutions, it is also economically.
Microsoft, as a case study, invested substantially in this segment under the leadership of Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Chief Accessibility Officer at Microsoft.
Lay-Flurrie outlines the company’s significant strides to improve accessibility and inclusivity for people with disabilities. She leads initiatives to create inclusive products, services, and hiring practices.
In this video from Disability Summit 2023, Lay-Flurrie emphasizes Microsoft’s holistic approach, aiming to leverage AI responsibly and inclusively, recognizing the historical role of people with disabilities as early adopters of new technologies.
Generally, Artificial intelligence significantly enhances accessibility and inclusivity for people with disabilities. AI technologies provide various solutions to improve their daily lives, enabling greater autonomy and social participation. For more examples of current applications, check the article on inclusive city makers in DigitalRosh.

2. Report: 10 Top Strategic Technology Trends 2024 (Gartner)
Each year, Gartner selects top trends that are important strategically because they are expected to:
- Significantly impact or be impacted by a technology
- Require a response from C-suite executives responsible for digital and/or IT strategy
- Demand a response (either a decision to act or action itself) in the next 0-36 months
In the fast-evolving age of artificial intelligence (AI), these innovations can help your organization build and protect itself while generating value. Some are driven by AI; others help you to operate and grow effectively and safely, as customer expectations and business models evolve with AI:
- AI Trust, Risk and Security Management (AI TRiSM)
- Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM)Sustainable Technology
- Platform Engineering
- AI-Augmented Development
- Industry Cloud Platforms
Intelligent Applications - Democratized Generative AI
- Augmented Connected Workforce

3. Market: The Rise of AI-Powered Smart Cities (S&P Global)
The article by S&P Global discusses the rise of AI-powered smart cities, detailing their benefits, risks, and future predictions. AI-powered smart cities utilize technology, including AI and IoT, to improve infrastructure, enhance quality of life, and address urban challenges. The goal is to create efficient, sustainable, and responsive urban environments.
The main benefits are enhanced public safety, sustainability, improved quality of life, enhanced resident experience, open data portals and digital government services, and optimized transportation.
Some of the risks are data privacy, security, digital equity, and bias.
The near-term impact of AI on smart cities will focus on traditional AI applications and generative AI. Expected advancements include enhanced digital government services, smart transportation integration, and city modeling. Proactive measures, such as equitable deployment strategies, are essential to mitigate risks and ensure the ethical use of technology.

4. Guide: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
The guide to effective leaders is based on Stephen R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
No matter how competent a person is, they will not have sustained and lasting success unless they can effectively lead themselves, influence, engage and collaborate with others, and continuously improve and renew their capabilities.
These elements are at the heart of personal, team, and organizational effectiveness. The book ignores trends and pop psychology and focuses on timeless principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity. Covey sums up the habits:
- Be Proactive: Focus and act on what you can control and influence instead of what you can’t.
- Begin With the End in Mind: Define clear measures of success and a plan to achieve them.
- Put First Things First: Prioritize and achieve your most important goals instead of constantly reacting to urgencies.
- Think Win-Win: Collaborate more effectively by building high-trust relationships.
- Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood: Influence others by developing a deep understanding of their needs and perspectives.
- Synergize: Develop innovative solutions that leverage differences and satisfy all key stakeholders.
- Sharpen the Saw: Increase motivation, energy, and work/life balance by making time for renewing activities.
