AI to Combat Floods, Wildfires, and Extreme Heat

Google’s AI initiatives are aimed at addressing key challenges brought about by climate change:

Flood Forecasting: Google is using advanced AI and geospatial analysis to provide real-time flood forecasting information. Their Flood Hub platform, available in 80 countries, offers forecasts up to seven days in advance, benefiting millions of people across Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and South and Central America. By expanding to the U.S. and Canada, covering over 800 locations, they aim to provide flood forecasting globally and for different types of floods. AI-driven flood forecasts help inform communities, individuals, and local emergency response agencies, enabling them to take proactive measures to minimize flood impacts.

Wildfire Tracking and Prediction: Google is leveraging AI and satellite imagery to track wildfire boundaries in close to real-time, updating every 15 minutes. They are also exploring the use of AI to predict how wildfires will spread. In collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, they are making significant updates to fire spread models, incorporating machine learning to improve understanding and prediction of fire dynamics. This enhanced model will assist fire authorities, firefighters, and organizations in planning and responding more effectively to wildfires.

Extreme Heat Response: Google has introduced extreme heat alerts and information on how to stay cool during heatwaves. They also work on reducing “heat islands” in urban areas by using AI and aerial imagery to identify shaded areas where more trees can be planted. This Tree Canopy tool is being expanded to over 2,000 cities worldwide. Moreover, Google offers insights on “cool roofs” using AI and aerial imagery to map the solar reflectivity of cities, helping urban planners and governments deploy cool roof solutions in areas that would benefit most. This initiative aims to reduce the urban heat island effect.

In addition to flood forecasting, Google is using AI for hurricane prediction and response, providing authoritative forecasts and safety information via SOS Alerts in Search and Maps. They also analyze satellite imagery to allocate aid effectively after disasters. It also addresses climate change’s impact on natural resources and food security using AI to optimize traffic lights, improve air quality, and expand tree canopy insights in cities. They collaborate with Alphabet’s Mineral project to build a sustainable food system using AI and support startups addressing food security. AI is also leveraged to detect locust outbreaks and protect crops.
