The historical role of universities is fundamentally changing. The authors talk about the contrast that most universities face where most universities are no longer the best place to do research and no longer the best place to teach. Their societal service as innovators, places for new ideas to turn into ventures, for policy and government feedback, etc. can be done elsewhere.
