Cavalia: Innovative Circus, Horses, and Digital

Cavalia is a Canadian entertainment company specializing in the creation, production, and marketing of large-scale live shows and events. Cavalia’s shows combine horses, acrobats, special effects, and multimedia and it creates a unique circus experience.

The company was founded in 2003 by Normand Latourelle. Normand was one of the four founders of Cirque du Soleil.  After leaving Cirque du Soleil he created his own unique show. It took him 10 years to develop the idea of incorporating horses into an acrobatics show and to implement it in a way that would fit his vision (an exciting show with happy horses). Normand developed a unique segment in the live shows and actually created a “blue ocean” for Cavalia.

The company’s first original production Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, went on tour in 2003. In 2011, the second production was “galloping” out. Odysseo, the second program of Cavalia, combined 70 horses and 50 male and female artists. In 2022 they launched Illumi – A Dazzling World of Lights by Cavalia: a magical and captivating nocturnal journey created with thousands of monumental light sculptures. The digital element takes more and more parts of the show, but the horses are always at the center.

In the attached video clips, Normand Latourelle explains the path he took from the idea to founding the company and its first show:
