AI at Work Hard Part: From Experimentation to Business

Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report looks at how AI will reshape work and the labor market. The report’s main findings explore employees’ and leaders’ attitudes, experiences, and expectations, highlighting the increasing use of AI in the workplace and the challenges and opportunities it presents for both employees and leaders.

The use of generative AI in the workplace has nearly doubled in the last six months:

  • 75% of global knowledge workers use AI at work.
  • 46% of those using generative AI started using it less than six months ago.
  • 90% of users say AI helps them save time.
  • 53% of people who use AI at work worry that using it on important work tasks makes them look replaceable.

Leaders familiar with AI see its potential to be as transformational as the shift from a typewriter to a computer.

  • 41% expect to redesign business processes with AI within the next 5 years.
  • 42% foresee training a team of AI bots and ensuring ethical use of AI (47%) will be a core part of their job.

Leaders are facing several key challenges in implementing AI to drive business transformation, including:

  • Lack of a comprehensive strategy to transition from individual impact to using AI to drive overall business success.
  • Pressure for immediate ROI is making some leaders hesitant to fully embrace AI.
  • Despite concerns about job displacement due to AI, leaders report a shortage of talent for critical roles.

The report concludes that the increasing role of AI in the labor market presents opportunities for employees to enhance their skills, take on more strategic projects, and differentiate themselves in a competitive job market.

Organizations that understand and adapt to these shifts will be better positioned to succeed in an AI-driven future of work.
