Solar engineering, which belongs to the field of climate engineering, is a diverse collection of methods whose purpose is to regulate the sun’s rays and their intensity entering the earth and returning to space in order to combat the climate crisis created in part by the extensive use of greenhouse gases, which creates the greenhouse effect that captures the sun’s heat in the Earth.
Some of the solar engineering methods include artificial intervention such as seeding clouds in the sea, painting large areas white, and injecting stratospheric aerosol into the stratosphere in order to reflect some of the sun’s rays back into space
A letter initiated by 16 scientists and signed so far by about 300 scientists from around the world, calls on various players in the international arena, including the UN, to prevent the normalization of solar engineering as a possible solution to the climate crisis.
The letter is based on an academic article and the main claims that arise from it are that the artificial intervention in solar radiation should be stopped due to a lack of information regarding the future effects that this intervention will have (on agriculture, the weather, etc.) and that this may damage the countries commitment to reducee the use of greenhouse gases.
