The Interface Uses Us

The development of the digital space is the result of human interventions, writes Hadar Ben-Zur, a technology designer, about the effects of designing the digital space. How to design the interfaces with which we interact daily, affects our behavior in a virtual social space. The interfaces are a collection of design decisions whose role is to influence our behavior. What are The moral and ethical consequences of trying to influence human behavior through a user interface?

In the digital space, we operate within a set of rules written by people whose job is to predict our behavior and influence it. By nature, the digital space grows and develops through human intervention. Since the virtual environment is mostly limited to visual representation, design has a huge impact on the way we perceive, navigate, and interpret the digital world. Researchers increase their attention to this type of influence and to the fact that users are not fully aware of such effects.

Hadar Ben-Zur, formerly from 8200, Bezalel graduate, has a master’s degree from the Department of Visual Communication and Technology at NYU . Lives in New York and works as a senior designer in a studio that specializes in technology design. Investigates questions related to ethics, design, and human behavior in virtual environments.
