Learning: Surfing on Quicksand: Navigating a World of Information, Opinion, and Spin (NLL, Harvard)

Digital leaders and online influencers should always mind the difference between enquiry and advocacy, and check the facts properly when advocating for a cause.

In an era polarized by ongoing arguments in social media and elsewhere, it is often easier for people to become strong advocates for opinions they support, no matter whether these opinions are supported by enquiry and sound evidence or not. At times, the opinions advocated for can be harmless, however, often they can cause grave damage, such as in the case of the anti-vaccination movement.

In his talk at the Harvard Project Zero Next Level Lab (NLL) Distinguished Speaker Series, Prof. David Perkins of the Harvard Graduate School of Education discusses the differences between enquiry and advocacy. In our polarized era, strong positions almost immune to counter-evidence figure in many people’s worldviews. Some eras and settings have seen less of this, some more, but it’s always there. Why does this happen, especially around matter-of-fact issues with practical significance, issues that seem important to get right?

The blame often falls on poor critical thinking or “just politics.” But considerable research points to a more complicated story: how easily people flip between inquiry and advocacy, depending on personal and social circumstances. While there are no magic wands, this suggests ways we might do better in family, educational, organizational, and other settings.

Prof. Perkins will be a keynote speaker at DigitalRosh LIVE Weaving Digital series on November 15, 2022.

Cyber: Why Digital Trust Truly Matters (McKinsey)

McKinsey Digital report says that consumers value digital trust. The research indicates that organizations that are best positioned to build digital trust are also more likely than others to see annual growth rates.

A majority of consumers believe that the companies they do business with provide the foundational elements of digital trust, which McKinsey defines as confidence in an organization to protect consumer data, enact effective cybersecurity, offer trustworthy AI-powered products and services, and provide transparency around AI and data usage. However, most companies aren’t putting themselves in a position to live up to consumers’ expectations.

Consumers report that digital trust truly matters. They want companies to provide clear information about their AI and data practices, they expect rigorous data protections to be in place, and they will make purchase decisions based on these premises.

Businesses today need to take a broader view that allows them to see customers in their full lives and adapt to their ever-changing needs and priorities. Accenture calls this life centricity.

In their research, Accenture has found that companies that are furthest on the road to life centricity are best positioned to maintain their relevance and thrive. They are three times more likely to outperform their peers on speed-to-market and almost five times more likely to outperform on customer lifetime value.

Accenture breaks down 5 plays uncovered by their analysis, which represent different ways that companies on the road to life centricity are focusing their investments on capturing new growth amid uncertainty. The 5 life-centric plays to drive growth are:

1. Gain a profound understanding of people
2. Broaden your canvas for value creation
3. Creatively transcend industry norms
4. Design a delightful experience continuum
5. Build a fluid operation across functions
